Analytical approach

This appendix provides an integrated interpretation of the quantitative results presented in Appendix B, combining:

household structure projections
population age structure (age pyramids)

Results are analysed separately for each region (Lombardy and Sardinia). Comparative insights are derived from the joint interpretation of regional trends, rather than from direct graphical comparison.

Household structure dynamics

Across both regions, projections indicate a structural reconfiguration of household composition, characterized by:

growth in smaller household units
relative decline in larger family structures
increasing relevance of single-person and single-parent households

While absolute levels differ between Lombardy and Sardinia, the direction of change is broadly consistent, suggesting shared underlying demographic dynamics.

Population age structure and demographic ageing

The analysis of population age pyramids highlights a clear ageing process in both regions, characterized by:

contraction of younger cohorts
expansion of older age groups
increasing imbalance between working-age and elderly populations

Despite differences in baseline age structures, both regions exhibit consistent patterns of population ageing, which represents a central dimension of the analysis.
